These four men don't really look alike, nor are they all short or little,
yet they give the impression of being small shrimpy men.
Due to this effect and their countenances,
they were doomed to portraying sinister or stereotype ethnics
(except for the younger Harry Townes, who played vulnerable Everymen).
How to tell them apart?
Abraham Sofaer had the bulging eyes.
Appearing in the most westerns, Jay Novello was literally shrimpy;
previously he had had a significant radio career,
and was even in the cast of the second Gunsmoke prototype.
John Abbott was a Shakespearean, and you can hear it in his voice.
Harry Townes can be seen in seven tv Gunsmokes,
and acted frequently in the drama anthologies of 1950s television.
